Experience a Traditional Japanese Wedding at “Hanayome Noren Museum (Bridal Curtain Museum)”

Weddings, one of the most pivotal moments in life. Each country has their own unique wedding tradition. In modern Japan, many couples either hold weddings at chapels in pure-white wedding dresses or at shrines in traditional bridal wear. There are also unique regional traditions preserved in some parts of Japan.
This time, we would like to introduce you to a traditional wedding custom in Nanao, Ishikawa, called “Bridal Curtain Passage”.

What is “Bridal Curtain Passage”?

Started in the 1800s, this wedding custom, in which the bride’s parents prepare a one-and-only “noren curtain” inscribed with the family crest for her passage into marriage, has been preserved to this day.
The elegant design which includes lucky charms like “treasure ships” and “pine trees” as well as gorgeous colors, symbolizing their hope for their daughter’s happiness, are very eye-catching.

It is only used once, on her wedding day.

On the wedding day, the moment of the bride passing through the curtain hung over the entrance to the groom’s altar room, is a symbol the bride’s resolution. After the bride passes through the curtain and honors the groom’s ancestors, the wedding begins. After the wedding, it is said that the curtain is never used ever again.

The “Bridal Curtain Museum” displays these precious curtains

The bridal curtains are usually stored for keepsake and never used again after the wedding. Many residents voiced out their frustrations about how “It’s such a shame that these beautiful curtains are put away forever!”, so a permanent exhibition room was set up in the “Bridal Curtain Museum” for these curtains.
Around 10 types of these charming curtains are always on display, and the unique designs depicted by the patterns and colors also show the evolution of the art through the ages.

At the “Bridal Curtain Museum”, you get to wear bridal costumes and experience the “Bridal Curtain Passing”.
This service that allows you to wear traditional Japanese bridal costumes is a feature unique to our establishment. We also have costumes for bridegrooms, so it is perfect for traveling couples to make sweet memories.
