If you don’t try it once, you’re at a loss! Anpan from the long-established bakery “Kimuraya”

Hello, this is Payke writer, Reina.
Have you ever heard of the anpan (Japanese sweet roll filled with red bean paste) sold at the long-established bakery “Kimuraya”?
Being a long-established bakery since 1869, Kimuraya fans continue to grow over 3 generations- from parents, children, and grandchildren.
It’s unchanged deliciousness since its establishment captured the hearts of many, and there are now a lot of long-sellers from them.
I often ate the bread from Kimuraya when I was a child, so now, whenever my friends from overseas visit Ginza, I take them to Kimuraya every time.
Since it’s close to Ginza station, some of you might have seen the sign that says “Kimuraya’s Bread.”
To those who are thinking “I’ve seen the bakery but I haven’t tried their bread”, “This is the first time I heard of them”- I want to introduce you to some delicious bread that would make you want to go inside the bakery and buy some bread for yourself.

【Sakadane Sakura】

〔Price〕195 yen (tax included)
This “Sakadane Sakura” ranked first among the top selling items in all of its operating stores. Sakadane is a type of fermented dough that’s made from rice, rice malt, and water. In Japan, it has been used as a source of fermented ingredient since the ancient times. Actually, this anpan was given to the Emperor Meiji in 1875, and because of that, it triggered the spread of anpan throughout Japan!

There’s a double-layered cherry blossom (yaezakura) in the dented center and smooth red bean paste (koshi-an) made from Hokkaido-grown red mung beans (adzuki) inside. The exquisite balance between the nice scent of sakura, the sweet-tasting smooth red bean paste, and the traditional fermented dough makes this bread extremely delicious.

【Sweet Potato-Bean Paste & Butter (Satsumaimo-An Batā)】

〔Price〕240 yen (tax included)
This “Sweet Potato-Bean Paste & Butter” is made from their specialty sweet potato-bean paste and Hokkaido-made whipped butter that’s wrapped in soft French bread. There seem to be many people waiting all year for this product because this is a limited-time winter edition product.

The sweetness from the sweet potato in contrast to the gentle flavors of the whipped butter, accompanied by the French bread’s soft texture, allowed me to deliciously enjoy this.

【Red Bean Paste & Butter (An Batā)】

〔Price〕240 yen (tax included)
I highly recommend is this “Red Bean Paste & Butter.” It is the same kind of bread as the “Sweet Potato Bean Paste & Butter” I mentioned above.
Inside the soft French bread, there’s Hokkaido-made whole red bean paste (tsubu-an), which is made from boiled adzuki, and Hokkaido-made unsalted butter.
The great harmony between the whole red bean paste and the butter, along with the mouth-melting whipped butter, was amazing. I think that even those who dislike red bean paste can enjoy eating this.
By the way, this seems to be the No.1 most popular item at the main bakery in Ginza.
In stores, there are many more flavors like “jam”, “cream”, “yuzu”, “chestnut”, and “fig”.
I hope you have a taste at this long-established flavor that has been loved for many generations♡

As you can see in the photo, you can buy some bread and eat on-the-go too.
When it’s fresh out of the oven, you’ve got to eat it immediately, right!
Also, every weekend from the afternoon to the evening, Ginza-dori has a pedestrian paradise (or pedestrian zone, where the streets are closed to vehicles and are designated to pedestrians instead), so eating some Kimuraya bread while sitting at the terrace seats on the road might be a nice way to sightsee!
