Original Japanese curry as a ready to eat meal! Yokosuka navy curry

Hello everyone, do you know about the origins of Japanese curry? Actually, Japanese curry originates from the navy and [Yokosuka navy curry Navy blue] a ready to eat meal was created, and currently being sold, by taking reference from the original navy recipe. Today, we would like to introduce this product.

What is navy curry?

Japanese curry originated from the Meiji period (1868~1912), when the Japanese navy personel noticed the curry that the British navy personnel was eating. Based on its nutritional value and the ease of cooking, the Japanese navy decided to adopt the curry into its menu as well. Today, you can eat various curries, that take reference from the original recipe, in many stores in [Curry street], a street, in Yokosuka city of Kanagawa prefecture which has a long history with the navy, that was created to commemorate the history of curry in the navy. Therefore you can also see many different types of ready to eat Navy curry from Yokosuka being sold.

Characteristics of [Yokosuka navy curry Navy blue]

Today, among the various ready to eat curries available, I would like to introduce the [Yokosuka navy curry Navy blue] from Choumishouji K.K. This product has been cooked over a long time with ingredients such as onions and chutney; for those who are unsure what chutney is, it is made from boiling fruits such as mangos with spices, sugar and vinegar. Also another feature about the curry is that it only uses beef produced in Kanagawa prefecture.

As per its name [Navy blue], the product is packaged in a blue box. Also the color navy blue conjures up the image of the navy’s uniform.

Inside the box is 2 packages of ready to eat curry for 1 serving each.

You can heat up the curry by boiling the entire pouch in water for 5 minutes or empty out the contents onto a plate or bowl, make sure to wrap it in clear wrap and then microwave it. This time I boiled the curry pouch in water; the pouch becomes hot after boiling so make sure to be careful when you are handling it.

Having a taste!

I think I am ready for a bite! I added rice just like they do in the navy to make it into curry rice. The curry is simple without big chunky pieces of ingredients but its spicy aroma is mouth-wateringly appetizing.

The flavor of the curry is mellow yet rich! Also, it is slightly different from the usual curry that you can eat in Japan with its spicy flavor being fairly prominent.
The curry has a slight sweetness to it when it enters your mouth, due to fruits such as apples and mangos being used in its chutney, however, after that there will be a spicy punch that slowly spread, giving the curry an overall complex flavor.

It was surprisingly spicier than I expected, so I think it may have been better if the spiciness could have been toned down, especially for children and for those weak to spicy food. However I must admit that while the curry was spicy, it was also full of umani, made possible by the plentiful ingredients contained within it.
I hope you enjoyed the introduction today. The product introduced today can be found in large supermarkets or Donki Quote. It also makes quite the souvenir, so please check them out if you happen to see one!
