Perfect for the cold winter! Warm up your body and soul with Amazake and Oshiruko

When it comes to representative winter drinks in Japan, “Amazake” and “Oshiruko” come to mind. These two beverages, perfect for the cold season, offer the charm of a comforting warmth and the flavors that give you a taste of Japanese culture.
This time, I tried the freeze-dried versions of these drinks from Morinaga Seika that I found at a convenience store. I’ll share my honest impressions as I introduce them!
What are Amazake and Oshiruko?
Amazake is a subtly sweet traditional Japanese drink made from rice koji or sake lees. It is highly nutritious and is even called “drinking drip infusion” due to its health benefits.
On the other hand, Oshiruko is a sweet soup made from adzuki beans, with a rich flavor and gentle sweetness. It’s often enjoyed with ingredients like mochi rice or shiratama (sweet rice dumplings).
Both drinks are perfect for cold days, and they have been cherished by Japanese people for a long time as beverages that warm both the body and the soul.
1. MORINAGA「Amazake」
This Amazake is a convenient freeze-dried type that can be easily prepared by simply adding hot water or cold water. With only 50 kcal per packet, it’s perfect for a quick break without adding too many calories!
Upon opening the package, a subtle aroma of sake lees spreads out.
When I actually tried it, I could taste the gentle sweetness of the rice koji and the rich flavor of the sake lees. Additionally, the texture of the rice koji grains was noticeable.
One thing to note is that the flavor of the sake lees is quite strong, so those who are not used to drinking it might find the taste and aroma a bit overpowering.

2. MORINAGA「Oshiruko」
This one is also a freeze-dried type, and you can easily prepare it by just adding hot water, cold water, or milk. It’s perfect for a cold night or when you want to relax.
This time, I tried it with hot water!
Taking a sip, I was greeted with a gentle flavor that enhances the natural sweetness of the adzuki beans. The aftertaste is light, making it a great option for those who are not fond of overly sweet flavors. For an instant version, the taste is quite authentic, though I did feel that the adzuki bean texture was a bit lacking, and I would have liked to feel a little more of the bean grains.
