The Char m of the Rare Tradition Japanese Candle

Nanao City, located on the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, was once a prosperous port of call, and candle production also flourished. It is home to a store that has been making traditional Japanese candles for more than 100. This article is about the charm of Japanese candles that can only be found at this candle store in Ishikawa Prefecture.

Japan’s own unique organic candles

Japanese candles became popular in Japan with the spread of Buddhism; they were used to light Buddhist altars. Unlike Western candles, Japanese candles are made one by one using a technique unique to Japan, whic uses plant wax as its main ingredient along with Japanese paper as the wick. The materials are all-natural natural materials, making them gentle to the body and the environment.

Hand-drawn candles for offering in place of flowers

【Hand-drawn No. 2, set of 3 ¥1,100 (tax included)】

Pattern: Spring (Wisteria, Cherry Blossom, Ayame)
Burning time: Approximately 55 minutes
Candle size: 1.7 x 1 x 9cm
Box size: 11.5 x 7.3 x 2.2cm

In northern regions, where live flowers were hard find in the winters, people would draw flowers on candles to offer them to Buddhist altars. The box holds three small, cute, palm-sized candles with colorful pictures of wisteria, cherry blossoms, and irises, all flowers that bloom in spring.

The flame of these candles is larger and more powerful than that of others, because the inside is hollow, which allows air to flow through it. The warmth and gentle flame will make you forget about time, and draw your admiration.

The thick, strong wick means that you can cut it while it burns to control the size of the flame.

The wax disappears?! A cleaner candle

I lit it to the end. Western candles emit black smoke and have a burning scent, but Japanese candles are made from pure vegetable materials, which means there is almost no oily smoke. Here, the melted wax has accumulated and the wick has turned to ash.

After the flame is extinguished, you may be surprised to find that almost no wax is left behind. The melted wax is abosrbed by the Japanese paper wick and evaporates with the flame. The cleanliness makes for a pleasant experience.
