A Complete Guide to the Keana Nadeshiko Rice Skincare Series: A Must-Have for Your Japan Trip
The Rice Mask is a sheet mask infused with “Rice Serum,” a beauty ingredient extracted from Japanese rice. Known for its noticeable results and distinctly Japanese appeal, it has become a favorite not only among local users but also as a popular souvenir for international travelers.
In fact, the Rice Series goes far beyond this sheet mask alone. The lineup includes a full range of skincare essentials, from cleansing to lotion, allowing you to complete your entire routine with one series.
In this article, I’ll share my honest thoughts after trying the full Rice Series myself, along with tips on where to buy each product. I hope this helps you when shopping in Japan.

The Keana Nadeshiko Rice Mask is a hugely popular product, with cumulative sales exceeding 400 million sheets as of October 2023.
This thick, Japan-made sheet mask is infused with Rice Serum, a beauty ingredient derived from 100% Japanese-grown rice. Its carefully selected ingredients work together to condition and refine the skin:
-
Fermented Rice Extract to deeply hydrate the skin
-
Rice Bran Oil to soften and smooth
-
Rice Ceramide to support the skin’s moisture balance
-
Rice Bran Extract to refine skin texture
The skincare routine is simple. After cleansing, gently unfold the sheet mask and apply it evenly over your face. Leave it on for about 5 minutes, then carefully remove the mask and press the remaining essence into your skin with your palms.
The sheet fits well and stays in place without lifting. It’s generously soaked in essence, helping to lock moisture into the skin.
Thanks to the well-balanced combination of astringent care that helps tighten pores and rice-derived moisturizing ingredients, the mask feels gentle on the skin with little to no irritation. It’s especially suitable for those concerned about enlarged pores caused by dryness.

The scent is very subtle. Even those who are sensitive to strong fragrances should find it easy and comfortable to use.
The standard pack contains 10 sheets and is priced at 715 yen (tax included). There’s also the Rice Mask Value Box, which includes 28 sheets for 1,760 yen (tax included), making it perfect for daily skincare. Since this value box is available in limited quantities, be sure to grab one if you spot it in stores.

The Rice Cleansing Oil is an oil-based cleanser.

It has a very lightweight texture and spreads smoothly with just one pump. It glides easily over a wide area with minimal effort and blends well into the skin. The scent is soft and gentle, with a subtle, cream-like fragrance.

To test its cleansing power, I applied eyeliner, mascara, and lipstick to my hand. With gentle circular motions, the makeup gradually dissolved, making it easy to see how effectively it breaks down makeup.

After about ten gentle circular motions, the makeup had already been removed this much. It seems effective even on oil-based lip products and waterproof mascara.

After cleansing, my skin appeared about one tone brighter. It felt moisturized with no greasy residue or tightness. I was satisfied with both the makeup removal performance and how my skin felt afterward.

The Rice Face Wash comes in a powder form. Formulated with rice powder and clay, it is designed to thoroughly cleanse away old dead skin cells and the buildup that can clog pores.
The particles are extremely fine, making the powder feel so light that it almost seems like it could float away in the air.

For one use, the recommended amount is about a 2 cm mound, forming a small heap in your palm. You may find yourself using more powder than expected. Add a little water and gently work it into a lather.

This level of lather is said to be sufficient. Rather than creating thick, fluffy foam, it produces a light lather that allows you to cleanse smoothly. Apply the foam to your face and wash gently using circular motions.

The lather contains fine grains of rice powder, giving it a mild exfoliating effect. It feels almost like a gentle massage on the skin and is very pleasant to use.

After rinsing, my skin felt moisturized with no tightness at all. While I initially wondered if the lather was enough, my skin looked brighter and my pores felt thoroughly cleansed.
Rice Pack

|
Ingredients |
Water, Butylene Glycol (BG), Rice Bran Oil, Glycerin, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Polysorbate 60, and more |

This rinse-off Rice Pack has a white base with small granules mixed in. The texture feels as if freshly cooked rice has been gently mashed.

The pack has just the right firmness, neither too soft nor too stiff. It spreads easily while still adhering closely to the skin, allowing you to apply it carefully without rushing.

After cleansing, gently pat away excess moisture from your skin, then apply the pack while avoiding the eye area. Leave it on for about 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
The granules are jelly-like and soft, causing no irritation to the skin. In fact, they feel more like a gentle massage and are very comfortable to use. Once rinsed off, the skin feels surprisingly moisturized and bouncy.
My complexion also appeared instantly brighter, making it easy to see why this pack is said to leave the skin smooth, refined, and clear-looking.
Rice Lotion

|
Ingredients |
Water, PEG-8, Glycereth-26, Glycerin, Dipropylene Glycol (DPG), Fermented Rice Extract, Rice Bran Extract, Fermented Rice Bran Extract, and more |
|
Contents |
300ml |

The Rice Lotion comes in a generous 300 ml bottle, enough to last about three months with twice-daily use. It is also free from added colorants, fragrances, mineral oils, and alcohol, making it gentle on the skin.

The liquid has very little thickness and feels light and refreshing, with a water-like texture. When poured into the hand, it’s almost invisible due to its transparency. The scent is subtle, with a faint and natural lotion-like fragrance.
Despite its watery consistency, it spreads smoothly across the skin and absorbs well. It leaves the skin feeling well-hydrated, as if moisture has been thoroughly absorbed.
After application, the skin feels moisturized. Since moisture can evaporate easily after using lotion, be sure to follow up with a cream to properly seal in hydration, even if your skin already feels supple.
Rice Cream

The Rice Cream comes in a cute, rounded container and is compact enough to fit comfortably in the palm of your hand. The cream itself is, of course, formulated with rice-derived ingredients.

The scent is very subtle, with only a faint, natural cream-like fragrance.

It has a very fresh and lightweight texture. The cream spreads easily and glides smoothly over the skin.

Although the cream feels lightweight, it leaves the skin well moisturized after application. There’s no stickiness or discomfort, making it pleasant to use. Since it doesn’t feel greasy, it also seems easy to incorporate into a morning skincare routine.
There’s More to Explore in the Keana Nadeshiko Series
Keana Nadeshiko is a skincare brand that focuses on concerns such as clogged pores and dryness-related pore issues. In addition to its signature Rice Series, the brand also offers the “Girl Series” in red packaging and the “Boy Series” in blue packaging.
The Girl Series is designed to help dissolve hardened sebum in pores and soften the skin, thanks to the effects of baking soda. I personally use the foaming face wash from this line and have clearly noticed how well it removes pore impurities and blackheads.
The Boy Series, on the other hand, targets common male skin concerns such as excess oil and rough texture. Formulated with effective ingredients like baking soda, enzymes, and scrubs, it features a refreshing eucalyptus scent. This line is recommended for those looking to reduce greasiness and achieve firmer-looking skin.
The lineup also includes bath products that can be used for full-body care, making it easy to create a more comprehensive skincare routine by combining items from the series.

Where Can You Buy the Keana Nadeshiko Rice Mask?

The Rice Mask, along with the rest of the Rice Series and other Keana Nadeshiko products, can be purchased at drugstores and Don Quijote throughout Japan.

Depending on the store, you may find the entire series displayed together in one place. However, in some cases, items like cleansers and face washes may be stocked separately in different sections. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, it’s a good idea to check the relevant area or ask a store staff member for help.
Payke also offers coupons that can be used at drugstores and Don Quijote. If you’re looking to buy souvenirs at a better price, be sure to take advantage of them.
