Our female staff at Payke put this product to the test to answer the question, “What’s it really like?” We’re sharing our unfiltered opinions here!

KINS Cleansing Oil

Type: KINS Cleansing Oil
Volume: 100ml (Approx. 30 days’ worth)
Price: ¥4378

KINS Cleansing Oil is a product from KINS, a brand known for its concept of “microbiome care.” KINS offers a wide range of products and services, from cleansing oils and cosmetics to drinks and teas that nurture intestinal flora. Their approach has popularized the trend of “microbiome care” in Japan.

On the product website, the term “beauty bacteria concept” stands out. According to KINS, “beauty bacteria” refers to the natural skin flora essential for maintaining hydration. This bacteria breaks down excess oils and sweat into glycerin and fatty acids to help protect the skin.

KINS Cleansing Oil uses a proprietary formulation to maintain this beneficial flora while removing makeup, all while keeping the skin hydrated.

Five Functions in One

KINS Cleansing Oil offers five skincare benefits in one bottle:

  1. Face Washing
  2. Cleansing
  3. Massage
  4. Exfoliation
  5. Beauty Oil

These five benefits simplify skincare routines, making them perfect for busy people.

What We Want From Cleansing Oils

After gathering input from the female staff at Payke, we compiled a list of expectations for cleansing oils:

  • Thoroughly cleanse without over-drying: We want our makeup removed completely without compromising moisture.
  • Avoid greasiness: While oil-based cleansers are known for their effectiveness, they often leave a greasy residue, or cause skin irritation.
  • Simplify routines: Ideally, a single product should handle both cleansing and face washing.
  • Find a reliable makeup remover: We seek a product to stick with long-term.

Those who avoid oils generally cite issues like dryness and past reactions. On the other hand, oil users prefer it for thoroughly removing makeup, especially glitter.

Can KINS Cleansing Oil meet these expectations? Let’s find out.

Pros of KINS Cleansing Oil

Before (left) with waterproof mascara applied and After (right) after gently massaging with cleansing oil.

It quickly blends with makeup. Without surfactants, it easily removed waterproof mascara. The scent is also therapeutic.

It even removes glitter from eyeshadow without rubbing. This is gentle on my sensitive eye area.

I wasn’t expecting it, but it significantly improved my blackheads. I’m hoping it will continue to shrink my pores.

Cons of KINS Cleansing Oil

I felt like double cleansing was necessary because I couldn’t distinguish between residual oil and retained moisture.

While it cleansed well, I felt it removed too much oil after double cleansing.

It didn’t work as well with lash extensions compared to non-oil cleansers.

How to Use KINS Cleansing Oil

The oil has a rich texture and seems gentle on the skin even when massaged.

  1. Make sure your face and hands are dry.
  2. Apply the cleansing oil and blend with makeup.
  3. Add 2-3 drops of water to emulsify.
  4. When emulsified (turns milky white), rinse thoroughly with warm water.

The key is to add a small amount of water gradually to ensure thorough cleansing.

Allergy Warning

KINS Cleansing Oil contains ingredients derived from soy and nuts. Consult a doctor if you have these allergies.

Conclusion

Almost every day, our skin is subjected to harsh conditions due to makeup.

KINS Cleansing Oil allows for thorough cleansing while also nurturing the skin’s microbiome, which explains its popularity among Japanese women.

While we haven’t tested it in this feature, for those who find oil cleansers too harsh, there are also gel-type cleansers available. Be sure to check them out!

Why not start using a cleanser made with skin-friendly ingredients for gentle makeup removal and to nurture a healthier complexion?
